About Fair Winds

I’m glad you’re here.

I’m Dr. Ryan Tompkins and I founded Fair Winds Trauma Counselling to be a place of genuine healing and support. Located in the greater Nanaimo area, my counselling has been shaped not just by research and study, but by the lived experiences of the individuals I’ve had the honour to support. Although I have expertise in C-PTSD, PTSD, and addiction, I offer counselling that addresses clients real life struggles

Therapeutic Approaches

In our sessions, I rarely rely on a single “tool.” Instead, I draw from a variety of evidence-based modalities to create a seamless, integrated experience tailored specifically to you. Below, you will find brief explanations of these methods with links to deeper explanations. Our work will often blend them together to meet your needs in the moment. Your curiosity and willingness to explore these pathways are the greatest catalysts for change; together, we will use these frameworks to build a foundation for lasting success.

Treatment Process

Although clients often come into therapy wanting to address their issues quickly, research has shown, especially in the field of trauma and addiction, that the process outlined below, provides a significant degree of evidence supporting how clients not only enter therapy, but how the will process their experience and heal. This works regardless if clients have trauma or not,

The International Society of Traumatic Stress Studies developed this process and in my practice, I adhere to it due to its efficacy. This is outlined below.

Safety & Stability

This is about building our relationship, gaining awareness around your cognitive and physiological responses, and most importantly, resourcing.

Clients often feel significant relief from their stress during this process.

Reprocessing

This period of treatment involves utilizing various treatment and therapeutic modalities to treat and process emotional responses to trauma.

This isn’t about “talking about the event(s)”.

By accessing somatic resources, physiological responses, and cognitive distortions, a pattern of emotional congruency takes place.

Reintegration

This is the period about getting back to your life.

This is the process of taking all you have learned and processed, utilizing resources and strengths, and living a healthy life while maintaining the strengths you have gained.
